MLTC Newsletter – 20 December 2022

Manly Lawn Tennis Club Newsletter – 20 Dec 2022

Merry Christmas everyone, thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed our Christmas party. It was great to see so many tennis members and guests filling the Clubhouse.

This newsletter includes information about the upcoming Seaside Tournament, New Members’ Court Times, Members’ court information, First Aid Officer.

MANLY SEASIDE

After a three year absence the Seaside Tournament is back! From 26th December till finals on 31st December please come down and enjoy the tennis and have a drink. If anyone has their RSA and wants to help out behind the bar, let myself or Milton know. If anyone can spare an hour or two to supervise signing in of non members also let me know. [email protected]

Members Courts – a few reminders & updates – please read!

  • Saturday afternoons from 1pm to 4pm is Club Social
  •  A court captain puts people into groups, You play 8 games and then mix around.
  • All members are encouraged to join in Club Social for at least one set.
  • Outside club social hours on Sat ie. 11.30am to 1pm and 4pm to 6pm, members are welcome to put on their own sets
  • Tuesday afternoons online court bookings – 2 courts available for max 1 hour per booking between 4pm and 7pm.
  • This is run on an honesty system to allow all members to have a chance to use the 6 available 1hr time slots.
  • The 6-7pm time slot is very popular. In the interests of sharing these courts between more members, we are trialling a new rule that you can only book this time slot every 2 weeks. If, after 48 hours of bookings opening (ie by Thu for the following Tuesday), the court has not been booked, anyone may book it.
  • We will look for feedback both during and after the trial.
  • Thursday evenings – 3 courts 4pm to 6pm, 4 courts 6pm to 8pm, 2 courts 8pm to 10pm.
  •  There is no court captain after the earlier Thursday afternoon social finishes so we ask players attending on Thursday evenings to ensure everyone mixes around.
  • We would love to see more players using these courts on Thursdays.
  • Coaching – there should be no paid coaching of members during members times. If you wish to coach (or be coached) please hire a court from Scott.

We do appreciate there are a wide range of levels at the club. Our aim is to offer a range of times for players to book courts to play with their own group and opportunities to mix in with others. Doing this helps club members feel welcome, encourages players to improve and creates a good club atmosphere. We thank everyone for their cooperation and understanding.

First Aid Officer – If anyone would like to volunteer for this position please let me know. The job entails keeping the first aid kit updated and organising a first aid course for members every other year.

New Recreation Centre at North Manly

Warringah Recreation Centre is set to be rebuilt providing a welcoming, inclusive, fit-for-purpose space that gives women and girls equal opportunity to participate in squash and tennis following a steep increase in these sports.

Council has been successful in receiving over $3 million in funding from the State Government to rebuild the Warringah Recreation Centre. Council is also committing funds to the project which will see almost $5 million invested into the project.

Fit-for-purpose infrastructure is vital to increase the number of people participating in sport and investment into the new facility will help cater for the growing interest in both squash and tennis across NSW.

The upgraded Warringah Recreation Centre will provide opportunities for people of all ages, genders, abilities, physical capabilities, cultural and socio-economic background to take part in sport.

In 2020, the Recreation Centre had over 54,000 visits for tennis or 9,037 per court which is well above the Sydney average of 2,977 and 4,653 visits per court per annum average on the Northern Beaches.

According to Squash NSW, women and girls’ usage of this facility is expected to grow 40% while Tennis NSW data suggests that female participation in the sport is already at 40% and rising.

The concept plan for the new facility envisages five dedicated tennis courts and a minimum of three indoor squash courts both with spectator seating, accessible public amenities, changerooms, community storage, as well as floodlights, footpaths, bike racks and landscaping.

The project will provide a best practice example in NSW of a modern facility that attracts new users, increases participation and delivers physical and mental health benefits.

Construction is expected to commence by July 2023 with construction completed by 31 December 2025.

The project is made possible thanks to the NSW Government’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund.

Christmas Party this Saturday from 6.30pm. Lots of people have booked in for this event at the Clubhouse on Saturday, so it’s looking to be a fun night. Reminder if you are bringing a guest sign them in on arrival.

Tennis ball and equipment recycling update
Thanks to everyone who is putting their tennis balls and equipment in the box in the clubhouse to be recycled. Club Member, Andre sends these to ‘Game On Recycling’ who repurpose or recycle them. They’ve now collected 91,000 tennis balls and 18,000kg of sports equipment from 320 sites across Australia. Anything that can be reused is distributed through their charity partners and end-of-life balls and granulated at a recycling facility in Melbourne. The Men’s A Grade Doubles final was completed in very windy conditions last Sunday. Tom Donald and Gavin McVean were successful 7-5 7-6  v Shishir Das and Stefan Fontes. A very close match so congrats to both pairs.

Eight pairs competed on Thursday for The Owen Kennedy Trophy. Owen was on hand himself to organise the tournament and present the trophy. Bill and Bruce won their pool easily as did Sally and Suellen in their pool. The younger and more glamorous pairing in Sally and Suellen won the final playoff 5-0 when time was called. Thanks to everyone who competed and enjoyed a few drinks afterwards. This is an annual event for midweek players and Owen assures us he will be around for many more years to organise his tournament.

Please see photos of the finalists from Sunday and Thursday below.

Christmas Party

We are looking forward to a fun night with 60 members and guests joining us for the Christmas Party next weekend – Sat 3rd Dec. Starts 6.30pm – one free drink on arrival for everyone who has bought a ticket. See you there!

MLTC Newsletter 14 Nov 22 – Club Champs Results

MLTC Newsletter – Club Champs Results

Ruby Quigley became our latest Open Ladies Singles Champion when she defeated Maria Nicol 6-4 6-4 before a big crowd last Saturday. They both received prize money for their efforts which could be the first of many paydays for these promising juniors. Both girls are a credit to their parents and coaches as they are both great sports and very humble. Well done and good luck for your futures in this great sport.

Next match was the Open Ladies Doubles Final which had a wealth of Wimbledon experience amongst our four ladies. Bryanne Crabb (nee Stewart) was a doubles semi finalist at Wimbledon with Sam Stosur. Lisa Green made the 2nd round in Ladies Doubles. Caroline Bhaguandas played qualifying rounds for Wimbledon and was no 1 British Junior for 5 years. Nicola Bray has been a spectator at Wimbledon several times and she did not need any additional Wimbledon experience as she used her Manly knowledge to combine well with Bryanne to win the final 6-2 6-1.

Julia Gunn was on hand to present the Ladies Singles Trophy as Julia is a 4-time Ladies Singles and 7-time Doubles Champion at Manly as well as winning umpteen Mixed Titles.

The Open Mixed Doubles was the last match to be played and Maria combined with her coach Andrew Riminton to defeat Ruby and Bede 6-1 6-2.

Earlier in the day Bede Kirwan defeated James Graham 6-2 6-1 in an entertaining A Grade Mens Singles Final. Bede picked up prize money for his efforts in winning the A Grade Singles and being runner up in the Open Mixed Final. This could be the first of many paydays for Bede also.

On Sunday Catherine Williams won her second title of 2022 when she combined with myself, Denis Crowley to defeat Melinda Gray and Daniel Rodrigues In a closely fought A Mixed Doubles Final 7-6 6-3. Daniel was proudly flying the Brazilian Flag as the only Brazilian to reach a final in our tournament.

Following on Sunday, Bosko and Andrew Riminton won their Open Mens Doubles semi final against Dan Glynn and Vincent L’Heure, progressing through to the final. However, the Open Mens Doubles Final was eventually won by Cameron Green and Todd Maloney who defeated Bosko and Andrew in an epic match 5-7 6-3 6-3. Todd celebrated by taking everyone to play barefoot bowls which may be a sign of things to come for Todd in his senior years by playing lawn bowls??

The A Grade Mens Doubles is still to be played next Sunday.

Thanks to everyone who played in our championships (photos of this weekend’s winners/finalists below and full results attached) – we were blessed by good weather this year. We play our Combined Age Events in February when us oldies have a chance of winning without our promising juniors being able to enter.

Thanks for everyone who attended our AGM last Saturday. Virginia will send out the minutes and additional info later this week.

Quick reminder – Xmas Party – Sat 3 Dec – we hope to see you there.

Best wishes,
Denis Crowley
